Oil on board painting by noted Meriden, CT artist Frederick Matzow (Norwegian / American, 1861 - 1938). This is a unique entry in Matzow's oeuvre. This painting likely depicts a fantasy landscape of Matzow's native Norway. Large, imposing mountains guard a valley, containing a small village and cozy cottages. In this painterly work, Matzow juxtaposes the powerful grandeur of the mountains with the idyllic quiet of the town. Signed in lower left corner, "F. Matzow". Good condition, not examined outside of frame. 23 3/4" wide by 14 1/2" tall (opening), 27 3/4" wide by 18 1/2" tall (frame).
