Old Master oil on canvas painting signed “E. Moore 96”, a copy after the “Sistine Madonna” of Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio) (Italian, 1483 - 1520). Raphael was one of the titans of the Italian Renaissance, and his “Sistine Madonna” (1513 - 1514) is among the master’s most famous paintings. Showing the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus, she floats while Pope Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara stand to the side, with two angels (or putti) below. The original hangs in the Gemaldegalerie in Dresden, Germany. Moore may have been an English artist, and likely painted this copy of the Sistine Madonna from the original painting in Dresden in 1896. It is a good copy of Raphael’s work, with the face of Saint Barbara especially well executed. Framed in a large frame with ornate architectural details. Painting is estate fresh. It shows signs of age and wear, small areas of loss mainly around edges of canvas but also aorund the faces of Mary and Jesus, craquelure, as well as dust and grime. There are small splats of white house paint on the painting itself, which should be removed by a professional restorer. This painting is a good candidate for professional restoration. Frame has wear as well, and something seems to be missing from the top of the frame, where two nails are exposed. Canvas is about 35” tall by 26” wide, frame is 52” tall by 36” wide. A truly extraordinary painting. Note: not eligible for in-house shipping. Please make alternative shipping or pick up arrangements.
