American School oil on canvas portrait painting of an older lady. American, ca. mid to late 19th century. A naturalistic and sympathetic portrait of an older lady, wearing a black mourning dress and a veil. A well modelled and superbly executed portrait. Unsigned / signature not visible. Framed in magnificent gilt wood frame (oval opening). Rectangular canvas and frame. Condition is good overall, with craquelure on surface, crack across face. Otherwise, paint is good overall. Frame is gilt wood and plaster with floral and vegetal / fruiting motifs mixed with classical meander/ Greek Key designs. Condition of frame is good overall, with minor loss but is repairable. Painting measures 26" tall by 21" wide (oval opening), canvas measures 27" tall by 21 1/2" wide, and frame measures 36" tall by 32" wide by about 5" deep.
