An oil on board portrait painting of a red haired woman, signed "J.J. Henner". Jean-Jacques Henner (French, 1829 - 1905) was a respected member of the Paris Academy in the mid to late19th century, and is known for his classical style which dabbled in the use of chiaroscuro (stark differences between light and dark) and sfumato (a smokiness or haziness, championed by Leonardo da Vinci). This painting depicts a young woman with flowing red hair and dressed in antique attire. This seems to be the same red haired woman as other examples from Henner's work. This painting is also noted by Henner's characteristic darkness throughout. In theme and subject, this painting seems quite similar to the British Pre-Raphaelites and Symbolism. Signed "JJ Henner" in lower right of painting. The piece is framed in gilt and gessoed wooden frame. 13 3/4" tall by 10" wide (panel), 19" tall by 16" wide by about 3" deep. Condition: painting is in good condition, some crackling of varnish / paint from age as expected, but very little damage. Frame has some missing pieces of gesso, wear, etc. Dust is present, as expected with its age.
