Etching by 19th century American artist Gilbert Munger (1837 - 1903). Entitled "Herring Fleet", this piece depicts what is likely an English herring fishing fleet. While Munger is best known as a painter, he produced a number of prints during a trip to England in the late 19th century. This etching shows the boats all out, possibly setting out at dawn. The etching is signed and dated in plate, titled in plate, and signed in pencil by the artist. Strong plate marks. Condition: foxing on print and some surface loss at top left corner and top edge, discoloration. Overall, a handsome print. Matted. Size: 17 1/4" long by 11 1/4" wide (print); 23 3/16" long by 18 1/8" wide (matted). Includes frame, removed.
