Portrait of a dog, executed in charcoal and white chalk on wove paper, signed by Franklyn H. Stokes (American, 20th cent.). Stokes seems to have been a New Haven, CT artist, and this could possibly be a portrait of noted war dog Sergeant Stubby. In any case, the dog looks to be a terrier or bull dog of some kind, with pronounced jowls. A very cute rendition in any case. Signed “Franklyn H. Stokes / ‘36”. Framed behind glass, not examined outside of the frame. Some discoloration, aging on paper. 14 ¾” wide by 15 ¾” tall (opening), 18 ¾” wide by 19 ¾” tall (framed).
