Chinese porcelain figure of of Budai, or the Laughing (or Fat) Buddha. Chinese, early to mid 20th century (Republic Period). This hand painted porcelain sculpture depicts Budai or Hotei, an incarnation of Maitreya Buddha, who is perhaps the most iconic version of the Buddha in the Western world. Associated with joy and luck, Budai is well-regarded for his laughing face and plump stomach, which is often rubbed for luck. This sculpture shows Budai seated, clothed in a robs with flowers and shou symbols, and holding prayer beads in one hand and his treasure bag in the other. This statue is in good condition. About 5 3/4" tall by 6 1/4" wide.
