Oil on Artist panel, Initialed ADB lower left, possibly an oil sketch by Albertus Del Orient Browere (1814 - 1887). Text of an included correspondence from an art historian as follows: "Small Catskill Mnt painting, initialed A.D.B. SOURCE: "The New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America", 1564 - 1860. Written by: Groce & Wallace. ARTIST: Browere, Albertus D. O. 1814 - 1887. Exhibited in the National Academy 1831 - 1841. Moved to NYC, Catskills in 1834. Worked as a druggist during this period. Went to California in 1851, returned to Catskills in 1856. Painted until 1887. Most famous for his scenes done out west. Your painting was probably painted prior to his trip out west. Groce & Wallace doesn't have anything distinctive to say about his painting prior to this time. OTHER SOURCES: Bolton, Miniature Painters, Cowely, NAD, Van Nostrand and Coulter, and Metropolitan Museum - Life in America." Artwork measures approximately 10" wide and 12 1/2" high and is in fine condition with the exception of some rubbing from contact with the frame border (the board sits loosely in the frame). Gilt frame measures measures approximately 14 1/2" wide, 17" high and 2 1/2" deep and is in poor shape. Most notably sizable pieces of the moulding have chipped away, with cracks in the finish throughout. Frame also exhibits scuffs, scratches and chips throughout.
