Lot of four paintings, two signed by John W. Backstrom (American, 1899 - 1983), one unsigned landscape of the Meriden School (possibly Frederick Matzow), and one paintng signed "Newton". Backstrom was a noted painter from Meriden, CT, where he painted WPA murals as well as landscape paintings. Two small format oil on board landscape paintings by Backstrom, likely of Hubbard Park in Meriden. One is autumn, one is spring. Unsigned Meriden School landscape with birch trees, labeled on reverse of board "Conn. River Near Vermont". Painting signed "Newton" of a wooded area overlooking a pond. 8 7/8" wide by 6 3/4" tall to 10" wide by 13" tall (framed). Good condition, minor wear and tearing of paper on reverse of frames.
