1836 Ottoman Empire gold 1/2 Cedid Mahmudiye coin. Reign of Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808 - 1839). Mahmud was a modernizing ruler of the Empire, and he undertook much reform. This coin features Mahmud's tughra (ceremonial signature) on the obverse, and inscriptions on the reverse that give the year of his accession (1223 / 1808), the mint (Constantinople), and the year of his reign (29). A vine motif is present on both obverse and reverse. Condition / grade: VF. Total weight: 0.7 grams. Size: 15 mm / 1.5 cm. Gold purity: about 0.83.
